He played amateur tennis before the professional game offered huge purses and, even though his prize was a $75 voucher, considered his championship win at Wimbledon his greatest on-court achievement.“I remember the tournament like it was yesterday,” Mr. Siexas said in recent online video interview. “It was the thrill of my life in tennis, and I still think that’s the greatest tournament of them all.”Tennis experts called his game “complete” and especially lauded his fitness, speed, agility, and net game. He was ranked as one of the country’s top 10 amateur players more than a dozen times between 1942 and 1966, and beat players half his age well into his 40s. Some opponents joked ruefully that playing Mr. Seixas was “vexatious.”“I just prefer to play the game for the fun of it and make my living in some other endeavor.” Mr. Seixas on why he never turned professional. At Penn Charter, he was a basketball, baseball, track, squash, and tennis star, and he dominated local, regional, and national junior tennis tournaments in the 1930s and ‘40s. He hosted tennis camps in Wayne and Cherry Hill in the 1970s, played local exhibitions and seniors events around the region, and later became director of tennis at a resort in West Virginia and hotel in New Orleans. He cowrote Prime Time Tennis: Tennis for Players Over 40 in 1983 with Joel H. Cohen, moved to near San Francisco in 1989, and worked at the Club at Harbor Point in Mill Valley until he retired. He was always popular with other players and fans, and he won the 1948 William M. Johnston Trophy from the U.S. Tennis Association for “character, sportsmanship, manners, spirit of cooperation, and contribution to the growth of the game.”“I didn’t miss anything by not having the money. … My wife and I traveled all over the world. We lived like kings and queens, and that was it.”Mr. Seixas in 2023 on playing before big purses were awarded to tournament champions. Tennis stars from around the world posted sentimental birthday greetings online for his 95th and 100th birthdays, and current world No. 2 player Novak Djokovic said in a 2018 video: “Hopefully one day we can meet in person, and I can pick up some of your great experience and wisdom.”Elias Victor Seixas Jr. was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Philadelphia and grew up in Overbook Park. He beat tennis players twice his age as a 10-year-old and was compared favorably to fellow Philly tennis prodigy Big Bill Tilden. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business at North Carolina and chose life on the court over joining his father’s plumbing supply company. He married Dolly Ann Dunaway, and they divorced later. He married Toinette Alford, and they had daughter Victoria. They divorced later.Mr. Seixas liked to play cards, solve puzzles, and read the newspaper every day. “You’re the best,” former world No. 1 player Chris Evert told Mr. Seixas in last year’s birthday video. “You’re a great role model to me.”» READ MORE: Penn Charter alum Vic Seixas, the oldest living Wimbledon champ, is turning 100. The entire India might take a bit longer to get over from the cricket team’s recent triumph in T20 World Cup 2024. India edged past South Africa by 7 runs in the final match of T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29 to clinch an ICC title after 11 years. It was India’s second T20 World Cup title overall, and first after 17 years. After coming to India, the World Cup-winning team got a rousing reception. Among the many memorable moments was the picture of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli — the two stalwarts of Indian cricket — holding the trophy together during a victory parade in an open bus in Mumbai.A video recently shared by IPL franchise Mumbai Indians that was recorded by Suryakumar Yadav, a member of the World Cup-winning side, shows how Virat convinced his teammate Rohit for the iconic picture. In the clip, Virat could be seen convincing Rohit to walk with him and pose with the trophy in front of the fans.Watch it here:After India’s T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados, Virat Kohli called time on his T20I career, so did Rohit Sharma. A day later, Ravindra Jadeja too announced his decision to quit the format at the highest level.Former England batter and skipper Michael Vaughan said that the ICC T20 World Cup triumph was a perfect way for veterans Kohli, skipper Rohit and all-rounder Jadeja to bow out of the T20I format and there is plenty of talent to replace them.Vaughan He said that though the tournament was the perfect send-off for the aforementioned trio, they could have won more white ball trophies among themselves.(With ANI Inputs)

Toprak Razgatlioglu will be staying in WorldSBK next season despite talks with MotoGP teams. The championship leader has a contract with BMW and will honour his current deal with the German manufacturer.“After Misano, I saw many news stories about MotoGP,” began the 2021 Superbike champion. “We are talking to some MotoGP teams, but people don’t understand that if BMW say, ‘Toprak, for next year, it’s possible you go to MotoGP’, we say it’s possible.“I have one more year left with BMW. If they don’t say this, I’m staying with BMW because I’m very happy. I have one year left on my contract and I’ll stay here for 2025.“We’ll see for 2026 because we are still in contact with teams. This year is more important, I’m not focused on the MotoGP side.”Razgatlioglu will be staying with BMW alongside Michael Van Der Mark, after the Dutch rider signed a new deal.Speaking about the continuity at BMW, Razgatlioglu said: “I’m very happy with Mickey, he’s a good guy. He’s getting better after the big injuries. He’s pushing hard, especially in testing; thanks for helping because he’s always trying new parts!”In terms of himself, Razgatlioglu is hoping to secure a second consecutive WorldSBK treble after winning all three races in Misano. This weekend’s round at Donington Park is one that should suit the BMW rider, as he’s dominated at the British circuit in previous years. But Razgatlioglu will have to do so at less than 100%, following a training accident recently.Razgatlioglu said: “I’m feeling better, I’m very lucky and happy that nothing’s broken. I feel a bit of pain but when I start to ride the bike, I don’t think I’ll feel it.“When it gets warmer, I feel better. My foot is moving and it’s easy to walk. It’s not easy to move in some areas but it’s enough for this weekend.“When I crashed, I felt a lot of pain in my foot and immediately I started to get it checked out as I needed to understand if it was broken or not. I’m feeling normal; not 100% but 99%.“A hat-trick is my goal. This track is my favourite track but it’s my first time here with BMW. I like this circuit and my bike is getting better every weekend.”

After a solid stand-in performance for Yamaha at the German MotoGP last weekend, Remy Gardner will be back in WorldSBK action this weekend.Gardner stepped in for the injured Alex Rins, but back aboard his Yamaha R1 machine at Donington Park, the Australian is hoping to keep his impressive 2024 campaign going.”I cannot wait to be back in action in the WorldSBK field,” began Gardner. “First of all I’m thankful to Yamaha for the opportunity I had in MotoGP last weekend in Germany, it was a nice experience and I hope to have been helpful to them.“Now it’s time to focus again on our championship; we’re having a solid season so far and we want to keep the momentum alive.“Donington Park could be an interesting weekend for us, but for sure we’ll have to build it step by step, so I’m looking forward to it and I’m eager to see again all the guys.”Gardner’s GRT Yamaha team-mate Dominique Aegerter has not enjoyed the same success as Gardner in 2024.Nearly 30 points behind Gardner, Aegerter is hoping to bounce back after a tough outing in Misano last month.Aegerter said: “Our last round wasn’t the luckiest one, let’s say, but finally we have another race weekend and I cannot wait to be back on track. We know that our potential is higher and we’re keen to prove it in the UK Round.“I had some good races there in the past and I really like the track, it’s an old school one. I’m confident we can have some races. “After the Misano weekend I kept training really hard and pushed as usual to be ready, so I’m really looking forward to weekend.“It’ll be also really nice to feel the passion of the British people, their support at Donington Park is always amazing.”

Sean Strickland has caught the attention of David Goggins.
Although he’s adamant to stay out of the Octagon until given another Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight title shot, Strickland has stayed busy in the training room. During a recent trip to Japan, Strickland throttled Japanese kickboxer, Rukiya Anpo, before coming home to beat up a Navy SEAL in sparring.
The former UFC champion has since mocked Goggins, a popular influencer and former Navy SEAL, and the army branch in general. Therefore, leading to a challenge from Goggins to Strickland in an attempt to prove a Hell Week isn’t as easy as “Tarzan” believes.

“This is your opportunity to show the world that you can f*ck me up,” Goggins said in a video message (h/t talkSport). “I will have camera crews out there. You make sure you bring your f*cking camera crew out there because you’re going to want to get this on camera.
“A 49-year-old, broke down knee, f*cked up body guy is gonna put you through a camp that you think you can f*ck me up in,” he concluded. “This is your opportunity, Strickland. I haven’t forgotten about your video. I hope to see you there also.”
While he waits for the upcoming title fight between the champion, Dricus du Plessis, and Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 next month (Sat., Aug. 17, 2024), Strickland may have his plate full after accepting the challenge.

“Goggins, I heard you want a piece,” Strickland responded on Instagram. “Challenge accepted.
“Just so you know, man, the only thing you beat me at in life is f*cking running,” he concluded. “But guess what, I don’t have to f*cking run. You run for me.”
Strickland, 33, recently returned to the win column with a split decision win against Paulo Costa at UFC 302 last month (June 29, 2024).

The first-place Seattle Mariners find themselves in a unique situation, with a dominant starting rotation that’s among the best in baseball and sputtering lineup that’s among the worst.
Rost: Six bats that are potential trade fits for Mariners’ lineup
In recent MLB history, has a similar type of team ever been able to make a deep run in October? Guest host Ryan Rowland-Smith posed that question to MLB Network colleague Jon Morosi during Tuesday’s edition of Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob.
Morosi pointed to the 2010 World Series champion San Francisco Giants, whose elite starting rotation of Madison Bumgarner, Jonathan Sánchez, Matt Cain, Barry Zito and former UW Huskies star Tim Lincecum carried the team to October glory. Mariners fans might hear some striking similarities to those Giants based on Morosi’s recollection.

“Duane Kuiper on the Giants broadcast famously called it torture,” Morosi said. “The classic score of that entire season was 1-0. It was Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Jonathan Sánchez, Barry Zito sometimes – and they were winning games 1-0 and 2-1.
“They were, to be fair, a better offensive team than the Mariners are … but they were winning games with Lincecum dominance and then the occasional homer from (Buster) Posey or (Aubrey) Huff or Pat Burrell. And that was basically how they won. They did not have what I would describe as a fully functional offense, and they were World Series champions.”

The 2010 Giants led the majors with a 3.36 ERA and ranked fourth with a 1.27 WHIP. The 2024 Mariners, meanwhile, currently rank third in the majors with a 3.54 ERA and have an MLB-best 1.08 WHIP.
As Morosi mentioned, while the 2010 Giants were not a good offensive team, they were still better than the 2024 Mariners have been. They ranked 17th in runs per game, 15th in batting average, 19th in on-base percentage, 13th in slugging percentage and 17th in OPS. The Mariners are currently 27th in runs per game, 30th in batting average, 26th in on-base percentage, 28th in slugging percentage and 28th in OPS.
However, the 2010 Giants could provide a roadmap for what level of offensive production the Mariners need to truly contend for the World Series. With the Mariners’ elite starting rotation, they don’t need an elite offense. But as the 2010 Giants showed, Seattle likely does need an offense that’s producing somewhere near league-average.
“The pitching of that (Giants) team was great, and that’s why they won the World Series,” Morosi said. “The pitching of this (Mariners) team, if you line them up, they’re gonna be able to beat starter for starter just about any team in baseball. So you’ve got that piece. In some ways, you’ve figured out the hard part. Now you’ve just gotta bring in (hitters).
“Make some moves and go for it, because the moment in time in which your pitching is dominant and healthy is always fleeting. It is fleeting. I don’t know how long it’s gonna last, but it won’t be forever. … They’re in a unique spot and they’ve got something special with this rotation. Don’t waste it.”

(Picture Credit: X/@BCCI)Dravid was the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team that defeated South Africa by seven runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final played in Barbados on June 29.Former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid was offered the same prize money (Rs 5 crore) as the rest of the members of the Indian men’s cricket team after Men in Blue’s historic win in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, but according to a report, the 51-year-old refused to accept the extra bonus and therefore was paid the same amount (Rs 2.5 crore) as the rest of India’s coaching staff.“Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times on Wednesday. It was reported by Indian Express on Monday that out of the Rs 125 crore prize money announced by BCCI for the members of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 side, all 15 players and head coach Dravid will receive Rs 5 crore, and the rest three coaches (batting, bowling, and fielding) will get Rs 2.5 crore. But in a great gesture, Dravid said no to the extra bonus and asked the board to give him the same amount as his other three colleagues. The BCCI had announced a prize for everyone associated with India’s T20 World Cup 2024 winning team, and therefore four reserve players and selectors are set to pocket Rs 1 crore each, and Rs 2 crore each was assigned for the rest of the backroom staff, which includes three physiotherapists, three throwdown specialists, two masseurs, and the strength and conditioning coach.Dravid era endsFormer India captain Dravid, who was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team in November 2021, spent more than 2.5 years as head coach before calling time. LAS VEGAS, USA (July 10, 2024) – Chris Eubank Jr and BOXXER have today announced a major partnership deal, with the iconic middleweight star signing with the next generation boxing promoter as he targets mega-fights and vows to silence his domestic rivals ahead of his hotly anticipated ring return. One of the most recognisable names in world boxing, Eubank Jr has continued his impressive family legacy in a career which has seen the Brighton superstar twice capture IBO Super Middleweight and WBA interim Middleweight World Titles and claim notable wins over James DeGale, Arthur Abraham, Liam Smith, Matvey Korobov, Avni Yildirim and Dmitrii Chudinov. The top-rated middleweight contender looked at his best last time out when ending his rivalry with Liam Smith with an emphatic tenth-round stoppage win over the former WBO World Champion in front of a capacity crowd at the AO Arena in Manchester in September. Having joined forces with BOXXER, the Las Vegas-based fighter has now set his sights on the biggest fights available including mouth watering match ups with pound-for-pound stars Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford and domestic grudge matches with long standing rivals including Conor Benn and Billy Joe Saunders. Founded by the UK’s youngest licensed promoter Ben Shalom with a vision to bring inclusivity, innovation and entertainment to one of the oldest sports in the world, BOXXER is a next generation professional boxing promoter. Home to world champions, Olympic gold medallists and some of the sport’s most exciting contenders, BOXXER have broken a host of viewership records in the UK and Ireland while delivering unmissable events featuring sold-out arenas and stadiums, and boxing’s biggest names going head-to-head. Eubank Jr is the latest addition to BOXXER’s star studded stable including WBO World Cruiserweight Champion Chris Billam-Smith, future boxing superstar Ben Whittaker, Unified Welterweight World Champion Lauren Price, WBO #1 Light Heavyweight contender Joshua Buatsi and fast rising stars Adam Azim, Caroline Dubois, Viddal Riley and Karriss Artingstall. Chris Eubank Jr said: “I’m very excited to have signed with BOXXER and Ben Shalom. They fit the direction I want to go in. We have big plans over the next 12 to 24 months. There are big fights in the pipeline and these guys can make it happen. This is a partnership. I have the freedom and the leeway to work how I want to work, which is very rare. I’m in a position of power. I’m in a position to really control the direction that I want to go in so I’m excited.“I’ve been in the game for 12 years now and I’m still hungry. I’m still excited. I’m still in love with the sport of boxing. I’m in a blessed position right now where there are 4 or 5 different names out there that are mega fights that everybody wants to see. Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford, Conor Benn, Billy Joe Saunders – and that’s just off the top of my head. There are many more fights out there that can be made, even domestically, so I’m in an exciting position.”BOXXER Founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “Chris Eubank Jr is undoubtedly one of the biggest star attractions in boxing. He brings excitement and intrigue wherever he goes. BOXXER is his natural home and I’m incredibly excited to work with Chris to make sure we fully realise his huge potential and fierce ambition. We’ve had the privilege of working with Chris on some massive fight nights in the UK and there will be plenty more to come in the UK and worldwide. He is a bonafide pay-per-view star. The hunger and ambition is there. We can’t wait to see him back in action and involved in some massive fights.”
