Scientists pay tribute to tennis players with new insect species named after them

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will go down in history as two of the greatest tennis players of our time, but their names have also been immortalized in science, as two new insect species were just named in honor of the athletes.

A team of insect scientists from the Integrative Insect Ecology Research Unit in Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University described two new wasp species named Troporhogas rogerfedereri and Troporhogas rafaelnadali in a tribute to the two tennis legends.
“T. rogerfedereri and T. rafaelnadali are parasitoid wasps, whose larvae devour their hosts from the inside,” says Buntika Areekul Butcher, who led the study to describe the new insects.
“As their names proclaim, they honor the tennis greats Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal, who although competitors on the court have been on the same doubles team too. Also, two of the authors are huge fans of both Roger and Rafa.”
Both of the new wasps are 6 mm long, with black, white and orange color patterns. They were found in two major Thai national parks, Khao Yai and Khao Sok, both of which are popular attractions for natural history tourists.
The scientists published their discoveries in a research article in the open-access zoology journal ZooKeys.

In the upcoming college football game, legends from the college ranks are being added. We already saw some of the legends to be included such as Miami Hurricane linebacker Ray Lewis and Louisville Cardinal quarterback Lamar Jackson. That got us thinking, what other legends from college football could we see? We chose one player from each team to be brought back to school and for you to play with in the upcoming EA Sports College Football 25.

York County Quick Response Team seeks players for its 10th annual golf fundraiser

The 10th Annual Quick Response Team Golf Challenge will be held Friday, August 2 at Grandview Golf Course in York. Here’s how to enter.

The York County Quick Response Team is looking for more players to tee off at its 10th Annual Quick Response Team Golf Challenge, which will be held on Friday, August 2 at Grandview Golf Course in York.

Formed in 2002, the York County QRT aids local law enforcement agencies “in the management and resolution of special threats and high-risk incidents.”

The team is composed of approximately 38 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies including York City, Springettsbury Township, York County Regional, West Manchester Township, Fairview Township, Penn Township, Northern York County Regional, Spring Garden Township, Southern Regional, Hanover Boro, West York Boro, the District Attorney’s Office and the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Over the years, the QRT has responded to an average of 10-12 calls regarding barricaded gunmen and 18-20 high-risk warrants per year, according to the York County District Attorney’s Office.

As the demand for the QRT’s services increases, the need for more resources to cover training, equipment, communication enhancements and other expenses places a financial burden on team members and their departments, the DA’s Office said.

The golf tournament is one way to raise funds to help defray those costs.

Those interested in participating should make checks payable to the York County Quick Response Team and either drop them off or mail them to the York County District Attorney’s Office (c/o QRT Golf Tournament), 45 N. George St., York, PA 17401.

Tournament entries cost $80 per person or $320 for a team of four.

Registration on the day of the event begins at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start scheduled at 8 a.m.

EA is finally paying college football players to be in its new college football video games. It’s paying NFL Players, too.Via Jordan Mendoza of USA Today, EA has struck a deal with the NFL Players Association to allow current NFL players to be included in the game.Current NFL players, like former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, will be part of the ultimate team mode included in the new game. Other former college players now retired from football are included.Ultimate team has been a major part of the Madden NFL franchise for several years. It allows users to create and upgrade teams with current and former NFL players, slowly improving the team into a juggernaut . . . unless the next version of the game comes out and you start all over again with a team that has a 59 rating.The college version of ultimate team could be even more robust, since it adds current college players to the mix with former college players now in the NFL and retired NFL players.

Enzo Maresca is currently putting his Chelsea team through their paces following their return to Cobham for pre-season training on Monday. It was the first opportunity for the Italian to work with his new team after replacing Mauricio Pochettino at the Chelsea helm in June.

Training footage from the club highlighted that Maresca is very hands-on when it comes to work on the training pitch and he could be seen trying to implement his ideas on his squad. The former Leicester City boss certainly has a number of players to work with at present despite Euro 2024 and the Copa America still being played.

Mykhailo Mudryk, who was in action for Ukraine only 12 days before Chelsea’s training return, was one of those back at Cobham after sacrificing part of his summer break in order to be there for the first few days of pre-season training under the new boss. Chelsea have been rather active in the transfer market so far this summer and there’s still plenty of time for more incomings and outgoings before the new season commences.

In regards to those players who are now back training for the new season at Cobham, could any of them be set to depart before the summer transfer deadline as Maresca’s squad starts to take shape? football.london takes a look below.
Trevoh Chalobah
Trevoh Chalobah will be in the headlines this summer regarding a transfer exit despite becoming a key part of the Chelsea backline in the final few months of last season. Maresca does have a number of defensive options available to him at present, with Wesley Fofana back to fitness after a torrid time through injury and Tosin Adarabioyo joining from Fulham.

Chelsea should certainly not be short on options if Chalobah is to finally depart Stamford Bridge amid so much speculation regarding his future in the past two transfer windows.

Andrey Santos
Chelsea need to decide what comes next for Andrey Santos after a mixed 2023/24 campaign. Restricted to only two appearances for Nottingham Forest in the first part of the season, the Brazilian enjoyed a much better time of it after linking up with Strasbourg.
The 20-year-old’s loan spell in France was certainly positive and it was reported back in May that they would like the Chelsea man to return on loan in 2024/25. If he is not to be in Maresca’s thinking, another year out on loan would be best for all parties.

Cesare Casadei
Just like Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei’s 2023/24 loan spell was certainly mixed. Making a loan switch to Leicester City and linking up with Enzo Maresca at the King Power Stadium, Chelsea shocked the Foxes in January by recalling the Italian.
Casadei was a regular in the Chelsea squad upon his return and he went on to make 11 appearances for the Blues. While Maresca does know exactly what the youngster can offer following their short time together at Leicester, Casadei has a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order and a loan exit could prove to be more beneficial.
Bashir Humphreys
Bashir Humphreys is now back at Cobham after playing 26 times in total for Swansea City last season. Picking up some worthwhile experience over the past 18 months following a loan spell with German side SC Paderborn the previous campaign, another move could be on the agenda for the 21-year-old.
Angelo Gabriel
Angelo Gabriel got regular minutes in the tank for Strasbourg last season but his campaign was brought to an early end through injury. Angelo will certainly give Maresca options on either flank but a number of players are ahead of him in the Chelsea pecking order as things stand.
A strong pre-season from the 19-year-old could give the head coach something to really think about.
Alfie Gilchrist
Alfie Gilchrist enjoyed an incredible breakout year at Chelsea last season and deservedly opened his account for the Blues with a goal against Everton. His football at Stamford Bridge could be somewhat limited next season, however, especially as the injured players from last campaign will be returning to action ahead of the new term.
football.london understands that Chelsea are open to loan offers for the academy graduate this summer. There should certainly be plenty of offers on the table after a really strong year in SW6.
Deivid Washington
Joining Chelsea from Santos last August, Washington went on to make three senior appearances for the Blues in the 2023/24 campaign. The forward was an unused substitute on 17 occasions in the Premier League, with Pochettino electing against putting him on in the closing stages of matches.
After barely playing last season, the youngster really could do with upping his minutes from August onwards.
David Datro Fofana

David Datro Fofana is now back at the club’s base after returning from his loan spell with Burnley. Despite the Clarets’ relegation, the attacker caught the eye at Turf Moore and registered four goals and one assist in his 15 games, with the youngster also scoring twice and contributing one assist during his 17 games for Union Berlin in the first part of the campaign.
Another move could come to fruition for Fofana unless he manages to force his way into Maresca’s Chelsea plans.

Things got chaotic in a hurry at the end of regulation between Colombia and Uruguay in their Copa America semifinal matchup on Wednesday night. Colombia won the game 1-0, but a scuffle broke out between the teams after the game was over. The players were eventually separated by referees, but then Darwin Nunez of Uruguay decided to take things into the stands. He went after some Colombian fans, even though some of his teammates were trying to hold him back from doing so.
Nunez was shirtless after he had given his jersey away to a fan. And he had his hair tied up in a ponytail after he climbed over the barrier and went into the stands. The game was being played in Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Police eventually separated the fans in the stands from the Uruguay players, but it didn’t seem easy as you might imagine. Here’s another video from Fox Soccer on the fight between the players after the game ended.

There must have been something in the water on Wednesday evening, as the scene resembled something similar to the Pacers-Pistons “Malice at the Palace” fight from 2004. It’s one of the more famous fights in American sports history and ESPN even made a documentary on it titled, “Untold: Malice at the Palace”.
According to multiple reports on social media, Darwin Nunez went into the stands after his family members were attacked by Colombian fans. Six fans have been arrested. Ronald Araujo tried to hold Nunez back before he went into the stands, but failed. And once Nunez cleared the barrier, that’s when things got even more heated.
No matter the reason for him going into the stands, he’s looking at a long, long suspension. Whatever punishment is going to be handed down is bound to be severe, no doubt about it.
With the win, Colombia advances to the Copa America final. They’ll face Lionel Messi’s Argentina during the final on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Meanwhile, Uruguay is set to face off against Canada in the third-place match at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Six amateur players with big league dreams will be among those who attend next week’s MLB Draft in Texas, hoping to take their first step toward a career in the The Show.
The players scheduled to be on hand at Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth are left-handed pitcher Cam Caminiti (No. 15 overall prospect) from Saguaro High School in Arizona; switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje (No. 25) from Mississippi State University; shortstop Kaelen Culpepper (No. 31) from Kansas State University; outfielder Braden Montgomery (No. 8) from Texas A&M University; second baseman Christian Moore (No. 13) from the University of Tennessee; and shortstop JJ Wetherholt (No. 4) from West Virginia University.
The group will be in good company historically. Among the 71 amateur players to attend the Draft through the years are three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, 2022 AL MVP Aaron Judge, three-time All-Star and 2015 AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa, and Phillies All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm.
The Draft will be held July 14-16 during All-Star Week and feature 20 rounds, including the first two rounds, compensatory rounds, Competitive Balance Rounds and prospect promotion incentive selections on the first night.
Draft order for the first six picks was determined by MLB’s second Draft Lottery held at the Winter Meetings in December. The Guardians will have the first pick for the first time in franchise history, while the Diamondbacks, Brewers and Twins each have an MLB-best four picks on the first day.
